The United Arab Emirates Federal Tax Authority (FTA) has announced the launch of a new artificial intelligence-powered digital platform designed to improve the tourist VAT refund experience.

The platform uses AI technology, digital verification and facial recognition to simplify refund procedures and reduce processing time. According to the FTA, tourists can initiate the process through the Planet mobile application and QR codes available at designated airport service points.

The system is operational at Zayed International Airport in Abu Dhabi, Dubai International Airport and Sharjah International Airport. Eligible refund requests may be processed digitally, while transactions requiring additional verification follow the relevant inspection procedures.

The FTA reports that the time required for tourists to receive VAT refunds has been reduced from approximately nine days to one business day. This initiative reflects the UAE's continued commitment to digital transformation, efficient tax administration and improved services for international visitors.
